Varun Gandhi walks free, at least for now

Etah, New Delhi:

He began these elections as a political lightweight. As it turns out, these elections will be remembered as the one where Varun Gandhi stunned a nation with his vitriolic remarks against Muslims.

On Thursday, Sanjay and Maneka Gandhi's son emerged triumphantly from jail after he was given parole for 2 weeks.

Varun has been given parole for 2 weeks. The Supreme Court was ready to free him for 30 days, but gave in to the objections of the UP government.

Mayawati even had this warning for Varun:

"If Varun behaves like Kalyan did despite undertaking, even further stricter action will be taken against him."

Varun, a first time candidate of the BJP, was jailed after his hate speeches in Pilbhit.

The Mayawati govt charged him under the tough national security act, which is yet to be dropped. Now, the breather gives him enough time to file his nominations on the 21st in Pilhibit.

But May first is another big court-date for Varun. The court will decide whether he returns to jail.

The main issue charges against Varun under National Security Act (NSA) still remains. After his political battle in Pilibhit Varun will have to fight the legal battle in Supreme Court.
