Varun Gandhi's parole extended till May 14

New Delhi:

The Supreme Court has extended Bharatiya Janata Party's saffron soldier Varun Gandhi's parole till May 14.

The two-week parole, which was earlier granted to Varun by the apex court, ended on Friday. Varun's lawyers were expected to seek an extension.

Varun was jailed under the National Security Act, imposed on him by the Uttar Pradesh government for making hate speeches during his election campaign.

Varun then appealed to the Supreme Court, which granted him a two-week parole with a warning that he refrains from making inflammatory speeches.

While Varun has been behaving in the last two weeks, he has even become the BJP's star campaigner.

He took part in 20 rallies in three days after being released on parole. The first speech he made after coming out of jail was that he wanted to be a 'kaam ka Gandhi' and not a 'naam ka Gandhi'.

The controversy surrounding Varun Gandhi came to the fore after he made a hate speech in Pilibhit in Uttar Pradesh, from where he is contesting the Lok Sabha election on a BJP ticket.

The young leader had also come in the line of the Election Commission's fire over his speech. The EC had recommended the BJP to cancel the Lok Sabha ticket to Varun Gandhi.
