Asserting that BJP leader Varun Gandhi had the staunch support of religious groups, senior VHP leader Ashok Singhal on Saturday said that the UP Chief Minister "will have to answer to public" regarding invoking of NSA against him.
"The BSP government and Mayawati will have to answer to the public regarding NSA being imposed on Varun Gandhi. Mayawati has done this to prevent him from campaigning in the elections," said Singhal, the international president of VHP.
Singhal said that it was ridiculous to slap Varun with such a serious charge, and added, "When the Shahi Imam of Jama Masjid and the Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan spoke against the law of the land, no political party dared to take on them but when a Hindu talks about his rights he is slapped with NSA."
Attacking Mayawati he said, "She imposed NSA on Varun for raising the issue of Hindu fundamentalism at a public meeting. But by slapping NSA on Varun and on the other hand giving a ticket to Mafia don-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari from Varanasi, she herself is promoting communalism by pleasing the Muslim community."
He said that the Hindus of the country will teach a lesson to Mayawati for giving tickets of her party to Mukhtar Ansari, Afzal Ansari and many other hard core criminals in the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections.
