An issue that has the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) divided is whether Varun Gandhi's alienation of voters, especially Muslims, was also a factor in the loss.
Leaders like Shahnawaz Hussein and Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi have been extremely critical, but does the Uttar Pradesh Police now have further ammunition to target the first-time BJP MP?
"They have frightening names - Karimullah, Mazharullah," Varun had said in his speech.
Forensic tests say that the voice on the hate speech CD is Varun Gandhi's. However, it is still unclear if words or sentences from Varun's controversial speech had been edited and relocated to change the context or the meaning in which they were delivered.
Varun has denied delivering communal speeches during his election campaign in Pilibhit - two speeches on March 7 and 8 that were splashed in the local media and created a furor.
The voice match report will be a crucial part of the chargesheet against Varun.
"We got a CD from UP Police during the elections. We examined it and have sent our report to them," said R V Verma, director, Central Forensic Lab, Chandigarh.
"All tapes have not been examined. Tapes are doctored. We have said there are deletions and changes. We will contest in court," said Maneka Gandhi.
Varun had refused to lend his voice for the tests. Now the Chandigarh lab has indicated the tapes could have been doctored, something Varun has said all along.
But Uttar Pradesh Police sources tell us a voice match is enough to nail Varun.
