At midnight a high voltage drama played outside Pilibhit Jail. Varun Gandhi was whisked away by the police, 200 kilometres away.
By 4 am, Varun was in Etah jail.
The police says he was shifted to take the sting out of the BJP bandh in Pilibhit.
But had nothing to do with Rashid Malbari. This member of Chota Shakeel's gang, arrested in Mangalore on Friday, was allegedly on a mission to assassinate the young Gandhi.
In the morning, after visiting her son BJP MP Maneka Gandhi gave the Congress and the BSP a taste of a mother's fury.
"I am worried. He is my son. Congress and Mayawati will have to answer if something untoward happens because he is not just my son, he is everyone else's as well."
BJP president Rajnath Singh says: "I've heard that there is a threat to Varun Gandhi's life. I want to warn the Centre and the state government that they must protect Varun Gandhi."
However, the police in Karnataka did not say Varun was a target.
Ajai Kumar Singh, DGP of Karnataka: "What they have told us is that they wanted to target some political leaders in Karnataka or elsewhere - wherever."
Mayawati may have wanted to take the steam out of BJP protests.
