Vasundhara Raje persuaded to resign

Vasundhara Raje persuaded to resign
New Delhi: Finally, some relief for the BJP.

Vasundhra Raje has agreed to resign as Leader of the Opposition in Rajasthan. For nearly two months, Raje had refused to quit, her defiance seen as another revolt in a party coming undone.

Her turnaround comes after a meeting with LK Advani. In return for her new acquiescence, Raje may be promised a senior party position and a say in who succeeds her as BJP leader in her home state.

It was party president Rajnath Singh who wanted her to step down, as punishment for the BJP's dismal performance in Rajasthan in the general elections in May. Before that, Raje had lost the Rajasthan elections last year. Raje pointed out that no other leader was being held accountable for the party's defeat in the rest of India. Her supporters rebelled openly against the party's Delhi command centre.

Raje's revolt had  coincided with the BJP's expulsion of Jaswant Singh in August. The former External Affairs Minister was sacked for writing a book that praises Mohammed Ali Jinnah and is critical of Sardar Patel.
