Three little girls were seen in a CCTV video weeping and desperate after they were trapped in an elevator for nearly 25 minutes at an apartment building in Ghaziabad near Delhi. The police have registered a case against the builder of the apartments.
The incident took place at "Assotech The Nest" society in Ghaziabad.
Security camera footage from November 29 shows the girls, around eight or nine years old, panicking in the elevator, trying to get help. They were stuck for 20-25 minutes, and their lives were in danger, says a police complaint from a parent.
The girls are seen trying to force open the lift's door, pressing buttons frantically to call for help and trying to console each other. They can also be seen weeping and comforting each other.
In the police complaint, the father of one of the girls, who is an 8-year-old, alleged that people often got stuck in the building's elevators and their multiple complaints had been ignored. "It poses serious risks to children and senior citizens, and can cause a serious accident," the complaint said. Children are now scared to use the elevator, the parent added.
Such incidents of residents being stuck in lifts are increasingly becoming common in the Delhi-NCR region, especially Noida and Ghaziabad, where hundreds of new building projects have mushroomed in recent years.
