Yavatmal: The ashes of late Union Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh were immersed at the confluence of Wardha and Painganaga rivers in Wani Tehsil of the district.

The urns containing ashes of the departed leader were brought to Dhamangaon railway station from Mumbai on Wednesday.

They were taken to Yavatmal in a specially decorated vehicle and kept in the Town Hall for the public to have a glimpse and pay their last tributes, sources said.

Later, the urns were carried to the holy confluence of rivers by Congress workers and leaders where the ashes were immersed last evening, they added.

Deshmukh, a two time chief minister of Maharashtra, passed away on August 14 in a Chennai hospital due to a serious liver ailment.

The ashes of Vilasrao Deshmukh were also immersed with religious rituals at Banganga in South Mumbai on Thursday.

State Congress chief Manikrao Thakre, former Mumbai unit chief Kripashankar Singh and six district unit heads of the party participated in the ritual.

The urn containing ashes of the late leader was kept for two days at the Mumbai Congress office to enable party workers to pay their respects.

"Many party workers could not go for Vilasraoji's funeral on August 15. Not many knew of his illness and were left shocked on hearing that he had succumbed to a liver ailment," Mr Thakre said adding the late leader's ashes were immersed in holy waters all over the state with religious rituals on Thursday.
