New Delhi: Music director and singer Vishal Dadlani, celebrity supporter of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), has announced he is quitting all political work after his tweet on Jain religious leader Tarun Sagar triggered a huge outcry.
In a tweet on Saturday, Mr Dadlani had mocked the Jain leader's address to the Haryana assembly on Friday. Faced with a barrage of criticism, he later deleted the tweet. Condemnation of the tweet however only spiralled and he trended on Twitter for hours. AAP chief and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal termed the tweet "unfortunate". Delhi Home Minister Satyendar Jain too apologised for Mr Dadlani's tweet. Responding to the widespread disapproval, Mr Dadlani sent a flurry of tweets apologising to several Twitter users including Mr Kejriwal and Mr Jain.
"I apologise wholeheartedly. My tweet was against the overlap of religion and governance. Not any particular religion," he said, announcing his decision to quit "active political work".
A case has been filed against the 43-year-old over his controversial tweet on the Jain religious leader.
Mr Dadlani has been an active supporter of the AAP and had been a star campaigner for the party during the Delhi polls. He also composed the party's famous election song, 'Paanch Saal Kejriwal'. Recently, he hosted Arvind Kejriwal's interactive online program 'Talk to AK'.
