New Delhi:
In light of the ongoing nuclear crisis in Japan, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today asked for more transparency in the functioning and decision-making of India's nuclear plants.
"Our nuclear safety record is impeccable but we cannot be complacent... Future reactors built in India will have to be certified by the Indian regulatory authority and meet its safety standards," said Dr Singh.
The Prime Minister's comments came after concerns were raised over the safety standards of the upcoming nuclear power plant at Jaitapur in Maharashtra. The project is being opposed by locals and environmentalists alike.
Earlier this month, Japan was rocked by a 9.0 magnitude earthquake which damaged the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear plant and triggered radiation fears.
