The morning after a bullet was fired at the convoy in which he was leaving his ashram, Sri Sri Ravishankar said he forgives whoever tried to hurt him.

"We are all calm. I would tell the person who did the shooting to come here for a couple of day's satsang. I completely forgive him," said the spiritual leader on Monday morning.

But the person who the guru wants to make peace with remains unidentified. The police said on Monday that its investigations reveal only that the bullet that hit a devotee of Ravishankar's was fired from a distance of at least 700 feet.  In fact, both the police and Home Minister P Chidambaram suggested that the guru may not have been the target.

"I would call it an incident rather than an attack. An attack would mean a specific target," said Karnataka's senior-most police officer, Ajai Kumar Singh.

The 54-year-old guru left his ashram five minutes before the bullet was fired on Sunday evening.

"Our reports says that the incident took place after Sri Sri Ravishankar left the place in his car and, therefore, it may not be correct, I underline, may not be correct to say that the firing was aimed at him," Chidambaram said in Delhi.

"It seems to be a dispute or a brawl between two of his followers. One of them has been injured in his thigh but is not in danger," he added.

The guru doesn't agree. "You can't absolve the incident saying it was a fight between two people. This is not justice," he said at a press conference in Bangalore. Vinay, the man who was injured, added "I have no enemies."

Chief Minister BS Yeddyurappa visited Ravishankar at his ashram on Monday evening and said the state government will provide security for the guru. "An inquiry is underway... the culprit will be punished," he stated.
