A delegation of Congress' Haryana unit including its MPs and MLAs, led by former Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, met President Pranab Mukherjee seeking his intervention in resolving the SYL canal dispute with Punjab and raised the issue of violence during the Jat quota stir.
The delegation demanded an inquiry by a sitting judge into the circumstances surrounding the jat quota stir and the role of the state government, alleging that the people have "no faith" in the BJP dispensation in Haryana.
Alleging that Punjab government has brought in a "illegal and unconstitutional act" on the SYL canal issue, the delegation said it has not only generated disappointment in Haryana but may also lead to chaos and disturbance of law and order situation in the state.
The legislation -- Punjab Sutlej-Yamuna Link Canal (Rehabilitation and Re-vesting of Proprietary Rights) Bill -- paves way for denotifying 5,300 acres of land acquired in Punjab side for 122 km SYL canal.
But in a setback to Punjab, the Supreme Court directed maintenance of status quo on land meant for the canal after Haryana alleged that attempts have been made to alter its use by levelling it.
The delegation urged President Mukherjee to save SYL canal, saying this is the lifeline of Haryana.
