New Delhi:
With DMK all set to disrupt Parliament over the UN resolution against Sri Lanka, Congress president Sonia Gandhi today said that the Centre will stand strongly for the human rights of the people of Sri Lanka.
"We are fully committed to the cause of Lankan Tamils and an impartial inquiry should happen into the allegations of atrocities against them," Mrs Gandhi said today at the Congress Parliamentary Party, the Press Trust of India reported.
The Congress-led UPA's southern ally DMK has made it clear that it wants the Centre to not just vote against Sri Lanka when the US sponsored resolution comes up at the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva on March 22, but also introduce amendments terming what happened to Lankan Tamils as 'genocide'. The DMK also wants an international probe into the alleged war crimes in Sri Lanka.
DMK chief M Karunanidhi has warned that he could pull out his ministers from the union cabinet. Senior Congress ministers - P Chidambaram, A K Antony and Ghulam Nabi Azad - failed to convince Mr Karunanidhi in a meeting in Chennai yesterday.
Massive protests are also being held by students in Chennai and other parts of Tamil Nadu in their demand for a resolution against Sri Lanka.
