New Delhi: A young woman reunited with her husband beamed at the Chief Justice of India, TS Thakur. "You seem to be very happy. We are also happy to see you smiling," he said to the bride.
After marrying a man from Noida in July, the woman, who had fallen in love with him on a visit to Delhi, returned to Chennai to inform her family of the wedding. Celebrations did not ensue. Her angry father locked her up.
Distraught, her husband turned to the Supreme Court, which ordered the Chennai police to bring the woman to Delhi.
The couple, who did not want its identity revealed, met for the first time in weeks in court today. The pair will now live in Noida together.
The Chief Justice then showed both consideration and a sense of humour. Turning to the woman inspector who had escorted the bride to Delhi, he looked at her badge and exclaimed, "Oh! Your name is Indira Gandhi!"
The Chief Justice then asked the inspector if she had a train ticket to return to Chennai. When she said she didn't, he asked the husband to organize her journey home.
In April, at an event attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Justice Thakur broke down as he talked of the extreme shortage of judges and the judiciary's consequent inability to deal with the thousands of cases that are filed every day.
