West Bengal Government Faces Heat Over Alleged Police Torture of Woman

The woman was allegedly tortured in the presence of Trinamool Congress members.

Kolkata: Opposition parties in West Bengal took up the issue over the alleged torture of a woman by police in the presence of members of the ruling Trinamool Congress, because her nephew was affiliated with the BJP.

The issue saw the BJP seeking the intervention of Governor Kesari Nath Tripathi and the Congress taking out a protest rally. A PIL in the Calcutta High Court on the matter by the CPI (M) is likely to be taken up today.

Hyatunnisa Bibi, a 22-year-old resident of Sattor Village in Birbhum District, has claimed that she had been detained from her maternal house in Burdwan District's Panagarh on Saturday, by police personnel who come in search of her nephew, Mithun Sheikh.

Mr Sheikh, a BJP supporter, was allegedly involved in a clash between workers of his party and those of the ruling Trinamool Congress. Hyatunnisa Bibi claims that police tortured her, rubbed nettle leaves on her body, slashed her right palm and smashed fingers of her left hand in the presence of some Trinamool workers. She was then taken to a hospital in Siuri.

Her husband, Sheikh Subur, had filed a complaint, in which he named four police personnel and six Trinamool workers.

One of the officers, named was Kartik Mohan Ghosh, officer in charge of Special Operations Group, who has now been "closed".  Birbhum's Superintendent of Police, Alok Rajouri, has said, "On the basis of the complaint filed by Hyatunnisa Bibi's husband, an FIR has been registered. Additional SP Ananda Roy has been put in charge of investigations and, pending enquiry, Kartik Mohan Ghosh has been closed."

The BJP has brought the matter to the attention of the West Bengal Women's Commission. Its members also visited Hyatunnisa Bibi at the Burdwan hospital on Monday.

The issue has been taken up by all opposition parties. BJP MLA Shamik Bhattacharya visited the woman's family at Sattor, while state Congress chief Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury led a protest march at Siuri. Left Front secretary Biman Bose has called for statewide protests today, against the "barbaric torture" of the woman. The Calcutta High Court is likely to hear a PIL filed by CPM leader Bikash Bhattacharya today.
