Kolkata:
Violence may have marred the third phase of the panchayat polls in West Bengal today but for a couple in the Sunderbans, the day ended on a good note.
29-year-old Gulehar Bibi went into labour just as she queued up to cast her vote at Basanti this morning.
She was taken to a room at the polling station where she gave birth to a healthy baby boy.
Other voters present at the booth even suggested cheeky names for the newborn. 'Vote', 'Panchayat' and 'Nirbachan' were just some of the innovative ones.
Gulehar's husband could not contain his happiness but expressed regret that she could not cast her vote.
The third phase of the rural polls was held in the three districts of Howrah, North 24 Parganas and South 24 Parganas.
Two people - one from the Trinamool Congress or TMC and the other from the Communist Party of India-Marxist or CPM - were killed in poll-related violence.
The Trinamool and the CPM traded charges of vote rigging, while the Congress flayed the Mamata Banerjee government for inadequate security at polling booths.
The two Opposition parties blocked railway tracks in protest and lodged complaints with the State Election Commission.
Forty per cent of voting was recorded till 2 pm.
