Mumbai:
Terrorist David Coleman Headley stunned a Mumbai court today when he broke into Hindi to this question put to him about his wife. "
Suhaag ko bachnana bada film dialogue hai" (this is a very filmy dialogue), the 55-year-old said from an undisclosed location in the US, from where he has been testifying via video conference.
Headley was asked if, after marriage, his second wife Faiza asked him to quit the terror group Lashkar-e-Taiba, on whose behalf he travelled from Pakistan to India to film the Mumbai landmarks that would be attacked in 26/11, leaving 166 people dead.
A lawyer cross-examining Headley said, "To save her husband's life and marriage, a wife can make any sort of request." The Pakistan-American's response in Hindi rejected that notion and said at no point was his life in danger from the Lashkar.
Headley also refused to disclose the name of Faiza's father, stating that he has no idea if his former father-in-law was a member of the Lashkar or the ISI, Pakistan's powerful military intelligence agency.
Headley was arrested in 2009 in the US, which guaranteed he will not face the death penalty in exchange for his disclosing information about the Lashkar.
Yesterday, Headly was questioned about his second wife, Shazia, and he flat out refused to share any information about her. "Shazia is my legally wedded wife. I do not want to disclose her location or answer any questions about her," he said, adding that she knew of his Lashkar links.
"Shazia never visited India. Originally she's from Pakistan," he said. He also said "I am not going to share what happened between me and my wife" when asked how she reacted to his disclosure about his serving as a Lashkar operative.
