Bhagwant Mann, a parliamentarian from Punjab's Sangrur, was allegedly forced to leave the stage during a ceremony held at a Gurdwara.
New Delhi:
Aam Aadmi Party lawmaker Bhagwant Mann was skewered on social media today after being ordered out of a religious function in Amritsar, allegedly because he was drunk.
Mr Mann, 42, denied that he was drunk in a Facebook post today in which he alleged attempts to vilify him. "There is no truth to the alcohol allegation. I can't even think of doing something like this," he said.
The parliamentarian from Punjab's Sangrur was allegedly forced to leave the stage during a ceremony held at a Gurdwara for two men killed in police firing during recent protests over the alleged desecration of the Sikh holy book Guru Granth Sahib.
In a video, Mr Mann is seen leaving the venue while being heckled by a crowd.
An organizer at the event was reported as saying that Mr Mann was "smelling of liquor".
"Mann should apologise to Punjab for this shameful act," said Jagtar Singh, a former "Granthi" or the ceremonial reader of the holy book.
As news of the incident spread, aided by the video, #DrunkBhagwantMann became one of the top trends on Twitter and stayed so for hours.
Among those who tweeted was Yogendra Yadav, who exited AAP on bitter terms earlier this year.
"Bhagwant Mann's behaviour shocking, not surprising. It's his habit. Arvind Kejriwal said Mann was drunk in Lok Sabha," Mr Yadav commented.
A flurry of tweets kept the hashtag trending almost all day.
