New Delhi:
Less than a month before the Mumbai terror attacks of November 2008, Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari is quoted in a US diplomatic cable as having reassured the US that he was "working on building 'regional ownership' of the extremism problem."
NDTV is exclusively reporting on the Pakistan cables in collaboration with WikiLeaks.
(Read: Full Text of Pakistan Cables)In this cable, dated November 15, 2008, then US Ambassador Anne Patterson records Zardari's meeting with America's topmost commander David Petraeus on November 3 that year. She quotes Zardari as saying that he was "building good will with India and wanted to increase trade. He wanted to convince Indian leaders they needed ownership of problems in Afghanistan because Pakistan and India cannot solve the Kashmir issue if Indian intelligence can take advantage in Afghanistan."
The cable notes that Zardari, who planned to visit Kabul soon, said "he recently met with the Indian Prime Minister, who he thought was not particularly well-informed on Indian intelligence activities in Afghanistan."

As part of a special arrangement that NDTV has come to with WikiLeaks, we will be reporting on cables dispatched by American diplomats who were posted in Pakistan. We shall do this along with the DAWN of Pakistan and the Indian daily The Hindu. All the cables will be posted on NDTV.com as we report on them and can be read here.)
