New Delhi:
The Environment Ministry wants to know why the tainted Adarsh Housing Society, a 31-storey illegal structure, be demolished.
They've issued a show cause notice to the controversial Mumbai housing society that has already cost the Chief Minister his job. Adarsh society now has three weeks to respond.
"This full building is illegal. We have come to the categorical conclusion that Adarsh violated Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) laws and have issued a show cause notice on why it should not be removed," said Jairam Ramesh, Union Minister for Forest & Environment.
With this, time and options are running out for the tainted Adarsh Cooperative Housing Society.
"We have given Adarsh three weeks' notice to reply," Jairam said.
The society, meant for Kargil heroes, widows, and defence veterans is under the scanner for illegal construction, in blatant violation of environmental laws.
The state Urban Development Department gave it a direct green clearance, without the mandatory approval of the Union Ministry and the CRZ Authority.
What is worse is that top politicians and bureaucrats in the state, cornered most apartments, including Ashok Chavan who was sacked from the Chief Minister's post, after it emerged that three of his relatives were flat owners.
While the Adarsh building may not just come down immediately, in fact, it could be a long legal battle ahead - the fact is that this is the strongest message from the environment ministry that all violators will be punished.
