In a packed hall, with representatives of 195 countries present, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said today, "We will ensure every citizen of every religion has an equal place."
The assertion on a global stage comes as the 10-month-old Modi government attempts to address widespread concern and criticism about a series of attacks on religious minorities back home. PM Modi is in Paris on his first visit to Europe and was addressing more than 1300 diplomats and others.
"Real progress is measured through empowerment of the weakest. This has been our creed since we assumed office nearly a year ago," Mr Modi said, adding, "We will defend and protect the rights and liberty of every citizen."
He talked about climate change and called for "a collective human action; and a comprehensive response."
"In India, faith and nature have had a deep link since ancient times. For us, the only path to prosperity is the sustainable one," the PM said, referring to western pressure on India on emissions when he said, "Too often, our discussion is reduced to an argument about emission cuts. But we are more likely to succeed if we offer affordable solutions, not simply impose choices."
He listed his government's efforts at developing clean energy that is affordable and accessible to all, also calling for a change in lifestyle and linking it to his efforts to promote yoga globally, to much applause.
His remarks come ahead of a crucial UN meet on climate change to be held in Paris later this year.
In Paris, where 11 people at satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo were gunned down this year, PM Modi also spoke of the global challenge of terror. "The threats are changing from domination by states to destruction by groups. We fight today not only over what we claim, but also for who we are. And, in many parts of the world, culture remains a source of conflict," the PM said, adding, "Culture must connect, not divide, our world."
As he walked into the hall, there were cheers of "Modi, Modi." He was welcomed with a musical performance and he began his speech by saying, "Our world is and will remain a better place because of the United Nations."
