Congress leader Arvinder Singh Lovely speaks in the Delhi Assembly on Thursday
New Delhi:
The Congress has asked Arvind Kejriwal's Aam Aadmi Party not to rush with important decisions, assuring the rookie party that there is "no danger" to its government in Delhi "till you keep taking decisions that benefit the people." (Track live updates)
So saying during a debate on a trust motion moved by the Kejriwal government in the Delhi assembly, Congress leader Arvinder Singh Lovely also confirmed that his party's eight MLAs will ensure this evening that Mr Kejriwal will prove majority in the House.
He cautioned though that some of the swift decisions that Mr Kejriwal has taken in the five days since he was sworn in Chief Minster, should have been better thought through. Like his free water scheme. "I urge you not to act in haste...water has become more expensive for most people. Your scheme will benefit about five lakh people, most of whom live in areas like GK, Defence Colony and Vasant Kunj," Mr Lovely said, listing posh south Delhi areas.
Mr Kejriwal has said his 20,000 litres a month free water scheme aims to help the poorer sections of Delhi.
Mr Lovely said the Congress came forward to help AAP form government in Delhi because "we did not want elections again in Delhi. We had the least to lose if there were re-polls; we acted as a responsible political party."
The Congress he said would support all efforts against corruption and that it had "considered all aspects before extending support" to AAP.
In a speech peppered with barbs at the BJP, Mr Lovely pointed to the opposition benches and said, "We are paying for our mistakes....but even after this so-called wave, you are still on that side of the house."
And to senior BJP leader Jagdish Mukhi, he said, to much laughter, "You have 15 years of experience in the opposition, we have just arrived."
The Congress was in power for 15 straight years in Delhi, before the year-old AAP decimated it with an anti-corruption attack on the party. Aap won 28 of Delhi's 70 seats. The BJP won 31 but said it could not form government. The Congress' eight legislators will help AAP reach majority at 36.
