Raipur:
In a brazen display of political sycophancy, a Congress leader in Chhattisgarh on Monday said that he would sweep the floors of the Congress office for party president Sonia Gandhi, if the need arose.
Charandas Mahant, a junior minister in the central government, had been recently appointed as the acting chief of the party's Chhattisgarh unit, after its top leadership was killed in a Maoist attack last month.
"I obey the orders and directions of Congress Chief Sonia Gandhi and I also obey the orders of Rahul ji, and I have been obeying them, and this is an absolute example for it that if they ask me to broom the Pradesh Congress Committee of Chhattisgarh, I will do it. For me, their orders are above all," the 58-year-old MP told reporters in the state capital of Raipur.
Former President Giani Zail Singh had made a similar comment three decades earlier after he was nominated by the then Congress government led by Indira Gandhi for the highest office in country.
