Winter no longer a deterrent for terrorists

Winter no longer a deterrent for terrorists
Srinagar:

Elections are on and terrorists are doing all they can to ensure that they are not smooth. With summer's arrival, the Kashmir Valley is seeing an increase in infiltration attempts by many more men as compared to previous years.

NDTV was at the Line of Control to get a first hand experience of the battle security forces fight everyday in the inhospitable terrain and why it's such a tough task.

Minutes away from Srinagar, the snow has melted at the Sharart Post on the LoC. There are 12-ft high Concertina wire border fence, one of the primary defence against infiltrators. Just a few metres high, they are easily buried under snow, making it easier for terrorists to cross over.

"This time the terrorist have started early and this time they are coming in large numbers," said Brigadier A L Chauhan.

At 13000 ft, the fence at Ustad Post on the LoC is completely under snow.

Because of the successful infiltration, Colonel B K Rattan Pal has adopted a summer strategy. That means sending up more men and supplies to the snow-bound, forward posts like.

In 2008, the first batch of infiltrators came in much later, perhaps this why they were successful.
