The results of the assembly elections in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh are likely to play out during the Winter session of Parliament beginning Wednesday.

The government plans to introduce 16 bills during 17 sittings in the session, while the Congress will seek to corner the government over a host of issues including the situation on the border with China.

Rajya Sabha chairperson Jagdeep Dhankhar on Wednesday said any incursion by the three organs of the government into each others domains has the potential to upset the governance apple cart and asserted that all should respect the "laxman rekha".

Congress, Trinamool Raise Parliamentary Leadership Issue

The Congress and Trinamool Congress on Wednesday raised the issue of the two parties being denied parliamentary standing committee chairmanship as has been the convention in the past.

Raising the issue in the Lok Sabha on the first day of the winter session of Parliament, Leader of Congress Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury and TMC leader Sudip Bandyopadhyay flagged changes made in the composition of the committees in October.

"The convention of appointing chairman of parliamentary committees from opposition parties is being done away with," Mr Chowdhury said.

Lok Sabha Adjourned Till 2 pm

Lok Sabha proceedings were adjourned till 2 pm on Wednesday.

Earlier the proceedings of the Lower House of Parliament were adjourned till 12 noon after tributes were paid to sitting MP and Samajwadi Party founder Mulayam Singh Yadav and eight former members who died during the inter-session period.

Mamata Banerjee To Meet Trinamool MPs For Winter Session Strategy

Congress leader and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will meet party MPs in New Delhi on Wednesday to decide the party strategy for the winter session of Parliament.

Ms Banerjee is likely to direct party leaders to raise pro-people issues on the floor of the House, party sources said.

The meeting is expected to be held at 3 pm at the residence of senior party MP Saugata Roy Banerjee was part of the G20 meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday and then visited Ajmer Sharif on Tuesday along with nephew and party national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday said Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar will uphold democratic values as the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha.

PM Calls For Collective Efforts To Make Winter Session Productive

15 Obituaries Listed Including Mulayam Singh Yadav's

The winter session will start on Wednesday with 15 obituaries of former lawmakers listed in both houses.

Lok Sabha will adjourn for an hour post-reading of the obituary today. Opposition MPs, led by Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury have requested Speaker to adjourn the House for half the day as a mark of respect to veteran politician and sitting MP Mulayam Singh Yadav who passed away this year.
