A woman threw her five children into the Ganga after a fight with her husband in their house in Uttar Pradesh's Bhadohi, the police said on Sunday.
Rescuers are looking for the children, the police said. Senior police officer Ram Badan Singh said the accused Manju Yadav and her husband Mridul Yadav have been fighting over family issues for the last one year.
"She thought of killing her children by throwing them into the river," Mr Singh said.
On Saturday night, after another fight with her husband, Ms Manju threw her five children into the river.
The police officer said the water near Jahangirabad ghat, where the woman threw the children, is deep. "A search for the children is on," he said.
The police said some fishermen who heard the woman and the screaming children in pitch dark ran away, instead of rescuing the children, believing her to be a witch.
The woman stayed on the riverbank after throwing the children into the water. On Sunday morning, she told people at her village about the incident.
