Woman beaten by cops: National Human Rights panel issues notice to Uttar Pradesh government

New Delhi: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has asked the Uttar Pradesh government to explain the alleged beating of a woman by cops at a police station in Aligarh last month.

The commission issued a notice to the chief secretary and the state police chief, calling for a report within four weeks, said an official of the NHRC.

The victim had gone to the police station to inquire about her son who allegedly was kept in illegal detention. According to reports, the woman's son was among six minors who were allegedly detained in the police station since May 27 in connection with complaints of thefts.

When she confronted the cops, the police station chief allegedly hurled abuses on her and asked his subordinate to beat her up.

The woman was slapped, punched and kicked before being pushed out of the premises, the reports said.
