Woman dies after acid attack by former lover in Madhya Pradesh

Morena: A 26-year-old woman has died and three of her family members have been seriously injured after a man, allegedly her former lover, threw acid on them at their home in Morena district of Madhya Pradesh.

The incident reportedly happened on Saturday night when the accused barged into their house in Porsa town in a drunk state. He is believed to be the victim's former landlord. The police are yet to arrest him.

"He wanted to meet her and asked me to call her and even threatened to kill her if she did not agree. He was drunk and had an acid bottle in his hand. He went to the room where she was sleeping along with her relatives and threw acid on them," one of the victim's family members told NDTV.

The victim, a married woman, suffered 60% burn injuries. She died in Morena district hospital. The others who were injured in the attack include her grandmother and two cousins.

After her marriage, the victim shifted to Ambah and along with her husband lived in a rented accommodation that belonged to the accused. Last year, her husband reportedly walked out of the marriage after he got to know of her alleged illicit relationship with the accused.

"The woman has said in her dying declaration that they were in a relationship and has added that the accused took this step because of some misunderstanding," a police officer investigating the case said.

According to police sources, the woman had refused to stay with the accused after the split with her husband. She instead chose to move into her parental house.

A case has been registered against the accused. He said to be out on bail in connection with an alcohol smuggling case.

Last week, the Supreme Court had slammed the Centre and state governments for not doing enough to curb acid attacks on women and for regulating the sale of acid in the country. (Read more)
