This year, at the Mussoorie Writers' Mountain Festival, Austrian mountaineer Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner's talk will be among the highlights.

Dehradun: Noted authors, mountaineers, conservationists, artists, musicians, filmmakers and photographers from across India and beyond are descending on Uttarakhand's mountain town of Mussoorie for the seventh Mussoorie Writers' Mountain Festival.

The three-day event, which starts off on Thursday, will see a series of talks, performances, screenings, workshops and exhibitions.

"The theme, 'women and mountains' is new this year and we've focused on women climbers, writers and social activists, all of whom have a special affinity for the Himalayas," Stephen Alter, the founding director of Mussoorie Writers, said.

This year, Austrian mountaineer Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner's talk will be among the highlights of the festival.  In 2011, the 44-year-old became the first woman to climb all 14 peaks above 8,000 meters and the first woman to do so without the use of supplementary oxygen or high altitude porters.

Founded in 2007, Mussoorie Writer's Mountain Festival is seen as an ode to the mountains, with close to 6,000 people attending it to date.
