Congress Backs 'Anti-National' Voices, Says BJP Youth Wing On Protest March

Protesters raised slogans and waved flags and banners.

New Delhi: Alleging that the Congress has joined hands with "anti-national" forces, the youth wing of the BJP took out a march in New Delhi today.

Supporters of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha or BJYM led by lawmaker Anurag Thakur marched to the offices of the Congress party.

Mr Thakur attacked the Congress for projecting Ishrat Jahan, the 19-year-old student killed in an encounter in Gujarat in 2004, as not a terrorist despite being named as a Lashkar-e-Taiba operative by Pakistani American terrorist David Headley.

He also said that the sedition law should be made stronger and asserted that that freedom of speech is not absolute.

"We will not let a political conspiracy by the Congress go on. I want to ask Rahul Gandhi why did he side with anti-national voices. You can criticise the government but you cannot criticise India," the 41-year-old leader said.

The march comes amid a row over Delhi's prestigious Jawaharlal Nehru University or JNU where students have been accused of organising an event where "anti-national" slogans were allegedly raised earlier this month.

Three students from the university have been arrested in connection with the controversial event under charges of sedition.

The Opposition, including the Congress and Left parties, has attacked the BJP-led government at the Centre for the police action against the students.

Responding to a statement by President Pranab Mukherjee yesterday in which he said that the Indian penal code needs thorough revision, Mr Thakur today said that changes should be debated.
