New Delhi:
The family of Indian Mujahideen co-founder Yasin Bhatkal says it is relieved that he has been arrested because "the truth will come out and our fears that he would be eliminated in a fake encounter have been put to rest." (Read full statement)
The statement, issued by Bhatkal's uncle, Zarar Siddibapa, says, "He should be punished if he is guilty of any offence after the due process of law is followed."
Bhatkal, 30, who is one of India's 12 most-wanted men was arrested last night in Bihar near the Nepal border, Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde said this morning. Bhatkal, whose real name is Ahmed Siddibapa, is reportedly being brought to Delhi.
Intelligence agencies say Bhatkal is responsible for planning and executing some of India's deadliest terror attacks in recent years, including a bomb blast at a bakery in Pune in 2010 in which 17 people were killed and nearly 60 injured.
His uncle says he dropped out of school in Karnataka in Class 10. His uncle says he left India for Dubai in 2005 and disappeared from there in 2007.
"Despite the best efforts of the family and the Dubai intelligence, Ahmed could not be traced," his uncle said.
