Bangalore:
Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yeddyurappa faces his first major test today, after the recent land scam allegations, as the Panchayat elections get under way in the state.
It is thought that one of the reasons for the survival of Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yeddyurappa in his post, despite major land scam allegations against him, was that Panchayat elections were just around the corner. The BJP high command may have wondered which other state leader could continue the success in elections the party has been having in Karnataka under Yeddyurappa.
"From last one and a half years, we have done lot of work for rural people. They are giving support in taluk panchayat and zilla panchayat election," said K Eshwarappa, State BJP President.
On being asked what about the allegations of scams against the BJP leaders? The leader shot back saying it is only the Opposition party leaders who are making the allegations.
And while the chief minister was backed by his party leadership, the Opposition in the state would hope the season of scams would dent the BJP's performance in the coming elections.
"We have been hearing about so many scams. Money earned by Yeddyurappa in this kind of scams will be used in the elections," said G Parameshwa, State Congress president
The Janata Dal (Secular) which led the campaign against the chief minister have just taken former chief minister S Bangarappa on board - but with public memory short, the many allegations Kumaraswamy made against Yeddyurappa may not eventually play a role in the minds of the voters.
When the last zilla and taluk panchayat elections were held - the BJP did not have much of a base in Karnataka. Now, they come in as a ruling party and hope to assert their dominance. But the Opposition is hoping the numerous allegations against BJP leaders would see the voters thinking twice.
