'You Are Delaying The Case,' Says Supreme Court to Murder Accused Italian Marine

The Italian Marines have been accused of shooting two fishermen from Kerala in 2012.

New Delhi:

The Supreme Court today granted one of the two Italian marines' request for an extended medical leave, while expressing anguish over the delay of the trial.

"The case has to come to an end. You are the reason for the delay. Trial has to come to an end, because of your petition the trial has been stayed by the court," said the top court while granting Italian Marine Massimiliano Latorre time till July 15 to return to India.

Italian Marines - Massimiliano Latorre and Salvatore Girone - are accused of killing two Indian fishermen in off Kerala coast in February 2012. The marines claim that they started firing allegedly under the misconception that they were pirates.

In January Mr Latorre, who had undergone a cardiac surgery in Italy, had sought an extension saying that he had developed medical complications. The top court, on January 14, had granted him a three month extension on humanitarian grounds to Mr Latorre after the Centre did not raise any objections.

Mr Latorre was first allowed to leave India on in September 2014, on an undertaking from the Italian Ambassador in India, after he suffered a stroke.

In December 2012, the top court had rejected a plea by the two Italian Marines, who wanted to go to Italy to celebrate Christmas. The court had said, "You cannot get such a leeway."
