New Delhi:
The BJP's Sushma Swaraj and Congress leader Digvijaya Singh today called each other better candidates for Prime Minister, while sparring on social media.
This round started with Digvijaya Singh's tweets this morning lashing out at Narendra Modi, who was quoted in a newspaper interview saying that India's first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru never attended the funeral of his Home Minister Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel in 1950. The Congress accuses the BJP of trying to appropriate the legacy of Sardar Patel, known as India's iron man.
Digvijaya Singh cited the biography of another Prime Minister, Morarji Desai, which had an account of Nehru attending Sardar Patel's funeral in Mumbai, to 'expose' Mr Modi's claims. Calling Mr Modi a 'liar', the Congress leader tweeted: "Couldn't BJP find a better leader? What's wrong with Sushma (Swaraj)?"
Hours later, Ms Swaraj tweeted her response, "Even I think Digvijaya Singhji is a better candidate than Rahul Gandhi."
This exchange came on a politically-charged Sunday when both Narendra Modi and Rahul Gandhi addressed rallies to campaign for the state polls and the national election due by May.
Mr Modi addressed a large gathering in Patna at exactly the same time as Mr Gandhi spoke at a rally in election-bound Delhi, provoking the inevitable comparisons between the BJP's Prime Ministerial candidate and the man seen to be the Congress party's choice for the top job even though there has been no official announcement.
