Dubai: A 27-year-old Indian man has been sentenced to three months in prison for harassing a woman at a shopping mall in Dubai, a media report said today.
The incident took place in Deira city on May 29 when the 35-year-old woman from the Philippines entered a lift and was harassed by the drunk labourer.
The court also slapped a fine of $545 on the convict for consuming alcohol without a licence and has ordered his deportation.
"It happened near the loading area. He was standing by the lift," the woman was quoted as saying by the Khaleej Times.
She claimed that the man groped her intentionally when she was about to enter the lift and was forced to walk out immediately after the incident while the man stayed in the elevator.
The woman screamed for help and caught the attention of nearby security guards who arrived immediately to her rescue, the report said.
The man tried to flee but was caught and handed over to police.
The man admitted when questioned by the police that he had been in an inebriated state but claimed it was not an intentional attempt.
The verdict can be appealed within 15 days.
