Melbourne: A 19-year-old Indian-origin girl has been killed in a mysterious car crash in Australia, prompting the police to launch a probe into the incident.
Aashima Goyal was killed in New South Wales. The University of Wollongong commerce student, who lived in the Campbelltown area in south-west Sydney, was a passenger in a car being driven by a 20-year-old man.
Ms Goyal was killed when she exited the fast-moving car, seconds after her vehicle was struck by a truck.
A number of vehicles swerved around her, but police said a tipper truck was unable to avoid hitting her. She died at the scene of the crash.
Acting Inspector Kylie Macfarlane said the circumstances of how and why the woman left the vehicle at high speed still had not yet been determined.
Investigators would examine the days and moments leading up to the crash, which occurred on September 25.
Macfarlane said the investigation, carried out by detectives may take a considerable amount of time.
Inspector Wayne Starling said the truck driver had tried to avoid hitting the woman but simply couldn't.
Her father Praveen Goyal said he had taken his daughter's remains back to India, where her extended family had performed prayer rituals.
