Jaipur:
In a bizarre incident, a family cremated the wrong body thinking it was their daughter's, as the bodies of two young women were exchanged following wrong identification by the family members of one the deceased at Sawai Man Singh government hospital.
The matter came to light when the family members of Asiya approached the mortuary to claim her body and found it to be missing.
Both the women, Sunder Devi and Asiya, were admitted in the hospital a few days back with critical burn injuries and died late last night.
Since both the bodies were charred, the brother of Sunder Devi identified the body of Asiya, a Muslim woman, as that of his sister, a Hindu, following which Asiya's body was handed over to them after postmortem.
After some time when Asiya's family members approached the mortuary, they found the body of an unknown woman in place of Asiya's, police said.
The police contacted the family members of Sunder Devi at Shyam Nagar locality but by then they had cremated Asiya's body, thinking it was that of their daughter.
Asiya's family members then collected pieces of bones from the pyre ash and buried them as per Islamic tradition, while the family members of Sunder Devi took her body from Asiya's kin and cremated it.
A case has been registered against the mortuary officials for negligence in handing over the bodies, the police said.
