On Rakhi, Jaipur Police Pledge To Protect City's Women

Jaipur: The women of Jaipur got a pledge of protection from the city police today, who went to every girls' school in the city and got rakhi tied.

Raksha Bandhan -- the ancient celebration of love between a brother and sister, in which the brother promises to cherish and protect -- appeared to an apt time to reinforce the role of the police and project a humane face.

"We will try and protect the women citizens of our city, the way a brother protects his sisters. The police will always be available, accessible and sensitive towards women's security," said an officer.

The policemen also gave the children a set of Whatsapp helpline numbers and email addresses where they can reach the police.

The outreach programme was also meant to bring people closer to the police and portray a more humane and friendly image of the force.

The Women's Safety Drive on the occasion of Raksha Bandhan is important in the context of Rajasthan, which as a state has always had a poor record on crimes against women.

According to the data from National Crime Records Bureau, Rajasthan is among the top three states in the country that records the highest number of crimes against women like rape, sexual harassment, kidnapping, dowry harassment and domestic violence.
