Jaipur: Over 40 lakh rupees in new currency notes have been seized from three people in Rajasthan today. Rs 35 lakh were seized from two businessmen in Jaipur and in another case, Rs. 6.72 lakh worth unaccounted cash was seized from the Nagaur district.
A police official said businessmen Sunil Gupta and Priyanshu Gupta, arrested with Rs 35 lakh in new 2,000-rupee notes, were on police's radar for a few days.
"We sent a policeman as decoy to exchange the notes last night. They got ready to exchange old notes for 25 per cent commission after which they were caught with the money," police officer Vikas Kumar said.
The police have informed the Income Tax department about the cash seizure for further action.
"If possible, FIR against them would also be registered," senior police officer Umesh Mishra said.
Police also recovered Rs 6.72 lakhs worth unaccounted cash, including 5.68 lakh in 2,000-rupee notes, from a person named Ajit Malik in Nagaur's Deedwana area. The remaining notes were in denominations of Rs 100 and 50. Nagaur is about 230 kilometres from state capital Jaipur.
Police said Ajit Malik failed to give a satisfactory answer to where the money came from.
"We have seized the money and forwarded the matter to Income Tax department for further investigation," Jitendra Singh, the Station House Officer of Deedwana, confirmed.
