Learn General Knowledge Through 'Memes', Another Import From Kerala

Memes filled with humour and general knowledge, this trolls page is becoming a popular attraction

New Delhi: PSC Trolls page is same as any other 'troll' page - memes are called trolls there - in Kerala cyberspace; but with one difference: you learn general knowledge from this. Memes filled with humour and general knowledge, this memes page is becoming a popular attraction to the students and job aspirants in the state. The page has got more than 90 thousand followers so far and it is increasing. PSC Trolls, like other popular meme pages, uses snaps of popular scenes of movies, mostly Malayalam along with dialogues similar to the movie scene to convey general knowledge to its followers.

This group was started by Nithin Raj, a BTech student at Musaliar College of Engineering and Technology, Pathanamthitta. He was attending PSC coaching during his semester break and he was struck by the idea of starting a PSC troll page to spread general knowledge among the internet using Keralites. His inspiration was International Chalu Union -ICU, a famous meme page in Malayalam and whykol.com.

"Nithin started it and he asked me to help him in managing the page, to establish the page, to promote the page and to make it available to people", said PSC Trolls admin member Venu OV who is also an active member of ICU.

In the Malayalam meme space, where movies stars, politics, religion and Narendra Modi create much opposition and applauds, PSC Trolls uses the same platform to disseminate questions and answers, mostly objective types, with crowd sourced content. 'Neenu Rajith, who is an ardent follower of the group, once sent us a thanking note saying she could answer 3 questions in a PSC Exam with the help of PSC Trolls. The popularity of this page is so tremendous and we get lots of support from the followers', added Venu.

The group is planning a logo launching ceremony and online quiz competition as it is touching one lakh followers' mark. The people behind this troll group, thirteen admins right now, are mostly students and working professionals. 'Getting appreciated is indeed a motivation. Film directors including Basil Joseph and Shanil Muhammed have sent messages extending their support', says Vyshak Sasidharan, who is also and admin member of the group.

In Kerala, 'Trolls' are mostly, doing the role of cartoons where they comment about socio-political issues with sarcasm and humour and they do not represent the dictionary meaning of trolling which is 'someone who leaves an intentionally annoying message on the internet, in order to get attention or cause trouble'. 'Meme is the correct term to use, earlier in Kerala, some miscommunication has happened regarding the usage. People are interested because memes come with characters of popular movies. In west, memes started with random people's faces. Eventually, popular faces were included' said Anjaneya Sivan, who is a freelance web developer.
