The National Civil Services Day is observed on April 21 every year and is dedicated to India's civil servants for their contribution and hard work in public administration. The first National Civil Service Day was observed in the year 2006.
The Government of India chose April 21 as the National Civil Service Day as on this day the country's first home minister, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel addressed the newly appointed Administrative Services Officers in 1947. The historic occasion took place at the Metcalfe House in Delhi. Sardar Patel had referred to the civil servants as the ''steel frame of India'' or in other words the backbone of the country's administration.
Sardar Patel also laid out the golden rules and principles of good governance for the civil servants in his address.
"Along with discipline, you must cultivate an esprit de corps without which a Service as such has little meaning. You should regard it as a proud privilege to belong to the Service, covenants of which you will sign, and to uphold throughout your service, its dignity, integrity and incorruptibility," Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel had said in his address to the administrative officers.
"Above all, I would advise you to maintain to the utmost the impartiality and incorruptibility of administration. A civil servant cannot afford to and must not, take part in politics. Nor must he involve himself in communal wrangles," he had also said.
Every year, the Prime Minister's Awards for Excellence in Public Administration are presented on this day to recognise and reward the extraordinary and innovative work done by districts and organizations of the central and state governments.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has wished all Civil Servants on the occasion of Civil Services Day.
The IAS association also tweeted that on this day they will rededicate themselves to the service of the nation.
"Service without humility is selfishness and egotism." - Mahatma Gandhi. On Civil Services Day 2021 we pay tribute to countless civil servants who are working round the clock to manage the COVID-19 pandemic. On this day we rededicate ourselves to the service of the Nation," the tweet read.
Foreign Affairs Minister and former IFS officer S Jaishankar also appreciated the "immense contribution" of the civil servants in a tweet.
"On Civil Services Day, appreciate the immense contribution of our civil servants, especially in these challenging times. Their work and dedication is deeply valued," his tweet read.
The highly competitive Civil Services exam is conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) in three stages -a preliminary exam, a main exam and personality test. The Indian Civil Service Exam is being held since 1922.
