Kanpur:
An under trial lodged in Ramabai Nagar district jail on Friday died under mysterious circumstances, leading to protests by prisoners who pelted stones and took some inmates and three jail officials hostage.
Ram Saran Bhadoria (51), an accused in a murder case, was being brought back to the jail after court hearing when he was taken ill and was rushed to a district hospital where he died early today, sources said.
However, prisoners, alleging that the inmate died due to police thrashing, created ruckus and indulged in brick batting in the district jail, police said.
They took hostage three jail officials demanding registration of cases against those responsible, however, later they were pacified by senior officers who reached the prison, sources said.
A constable and a jail official were also injured in the stone pelting, said Mayur Maheshwari, District Magistrate of Ramabai Nagar.
"It was negligence on the part of jail officials as they did not inform the police even though the prisoner died early morning today," said Subhash Dubey, Superintendent of Police Ramabai Nagar.
A magisterial inquiry has been ordered into the matter and a case has been registered against six prison officials, the District Magistrate said.
