Kanpur:
Union Coal minister and MP from Kanpur Sriprakash Jaiswal has met Civil Aviation minister Ajit Singh on the matter of a new airport for the city.
The two met on May 17 wherein the coal minister spoke of the Indian Air Force's station being currently used for civilian operations, a statement issued by Mr Jaiswal's office said.
This poses "its own difficulty to stay connected with important routes and therefore a separate airport must be developed," it said.
On his part, Mr Singh has "assured" Mr Jaiswal of soon completing a survey for the site of the airport within 20-25 kms of the city and then directing the Airport Authority of India (AAI) in connection with the matter.
The minister also requested Mr Singh to restart the Delhi-Kanpur-Kolkata service and launch one connecting Delhi-Kanpur-Mumbai.
