Kanpur: Several injured as doctors clash with MLA

The clash started when Aryanagar MLA Irfan Solanki objected to some junior doctors of Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi Medical College Hospital allegedly misbehaving with an elderly person at the Medical College Square.

Kanpur: A clash broke out between supporters of a Samajwadi Party MLA and junior doctors of a medical college in Kanpur on Friday, leaving several of them including the legislator injured, police said.

The clash started when Aryanagar MLA Irfan Solanki objected to some junior doctors of Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi Medical College Hospital allegedly misbehaving with an elderly person at the Medical College Square, said SSP Yashasvi Yadav.

The MLA's objection enraged the doctors who pelted stones at Solanki, who along with his supporters was getting his vehicle refuelled at a petrol pump there, Yadav said.

Solanki sustained injuries in the head, he said.

His car was also damaged.

As the news of the stone pelting spread, more supporters of Solanki reached the spot. Meanwhile, more junior doctors also came out of the college hostel. The two groups further engaged in brick-batting.

In the meantime, police also arrived at the spot and resorted to lathicharge to disperse the crowd.

Several junior doctors and some media persons, who had reached there to cover the incident, got injured in the lathicharge, sources said.

All the injured, including the MLA, were rushed to the medical college.

Yadav said Solanki was discharged from the hospital after treatment.

A case has been registered and around 36 junior doctors have been arrested, Yadav said, adding that search was on for other doctors involved in the clash.

Police force has been deployed around the college as precautionary measure, he added.

Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi Medical College Hospital authorities were not available for comment despite repeated attempts.
