Student commits suicide after beating by police, three policemen suspended

Kanpur: Upset at being allegedly beaten up by the police after being caught in a theft case, a high
school student committed suicide prompting authorities to suspend three policemen, said officials.

Vijay Kumar and three others were detained by the police on January 13 on a complaint by an eating joint owner, Suresh Fauji, that his tubewell had been stolen.

Kumar, who was beaten up by police, was later released after his father allegedly paid Rs 14,000 as bribe to Vihari Ghat Station House Officer, M P Singh.

The boy, who was upset over the beating, committed suicide by hanging himself from a ceiling on Saturday. Irate over the incident, villagers placed the deceased's body on the road, blocking traffic in protest and demanded that action be taken against those responsible.

Taking action, Vihara Ghat SHO M P Singh and two constables have been suspended, said Ramabai Nagar Superintendent of Police, P Ashutosh Kumar.

An FIR has also been lodged against the SHO, eating joint owner Fauji and three others on the complaint of the deceased's brother Roop Singh, added Kumar. Security personnel have been deployed in the area and further investigation is on, he said.
