Union Coal Minister pitches for metro rail project in Kanpur
Kanpur: Union Coal Minister Sriprakash Jaiswal has written a letter to the railway ministry demanding setting up of a committee to develop metro rail in his constituency.

According to a statement issued by his office, the Kanpur MP wrote to Union Railway Minister Mukul Roy on May 8 demanding the creation of Kanpur Rail Vikas Nigam on the lines of Mumbai Rail Vikas Nigam with the assistance of the state government.

"Kanpur is the 11th most populous city in the country with a population of over 20 lakh according to 2001 census. As per the national metro rail policy, such cities are recommended for development of metro rail," the statement read.

Being an industrial area, traffic congestion has become a big problem for the city, it stated.
