5,000 Saris, Piles Of Cash Found At Karnataka Tax Officer's Home

Around 5,000 saris from different parts of the country were found at the Assistant Commissioner's house.

Bengaluru: Seven government officers were raided by the Anti-Corruption Bureau of Karnataka on Wednesday. What they found at the home of a tax officer was beyond their expectations.

Around 5,000 saris from across the country were found in Assistant Commissioner of Commercial Tax Kariyappa Ningappa Karnal's house. His wife is a homemaker and has no separate source of income. The raid team also recovered documents showing significant property holdings in Bengaluru and Hubballi, the second largest city in Karnataka. His bank lockers will also be scrutinised.

Rs 1.35 lakh in cash was found in his office and an additional Rs 6.94 lakh was seized from his home. Bank documents of Rs 5.5 lakh deposits in son's name, a Honda Amaze car worth Rs 12 lakh and a two-wheeler were also found during the raid.

The officer reportedly owns a 10,000 square-foot land jointly with his brother Girish Shankar in Bengaluru, a house worth Rs 1 crore in his children's name and another apartment in the city besides two flats in Hubballi. Huge tracts of land were found in his name in various cities.
