The fire in Kalburgi in Northern Karnataka began at a neo-natal ward when 26 babies were in cradles.

Bangalore: More than 20 babies, each of them just a few days old, were rescued today from a major fire at a government hospital in Karnataka.

Television pictures showed broken windows in the neo-natal ward, smoky corridors, and burnt-out holes in some walls.

The fire in Kalburgi in Northern Karnataka began when 26 babies were in cradles, according to a staff member. All of them were rescued safely. The fire began at lunch and was extinguished a few hours later.

Hospital officials said the fire appears to have been caused by a short circuit in the air conditioning.

The babies have been relocated to different hospitals and are reported safe.
