BJP Urges Karnataka To Share More Cauvery River Water With Tamil Nadu

BJP's Shaina NC advised Karnataka to 'rise above selfish interests' and share more water with TN.

Bengaluru: The Bharatiya Janata Party on Wednesday urged the Karnataka government to release more Cauvery river water to Tamil Nadu and start a dialogue to end differences.

"The Supreme Court had made it clear that the Karnataka government must release the Cauvery water at this juncture. I think there is a need to rise above selfish interests of particular states and understand that India is one," BJP leader Shaina NC said.

The Supreme Court on Tuesday directed Karnataka to release 6000 cusecs of water to Tamil Nadu from 21 to 27 September daily.

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah termed the Supreme Court's order as "un-implementable" while calling for all-party meet to decide the state's next move.

Home Minister G Parameshwara on Tuesday had also expressed his disappointment with the Supreme Court's decision. He ordered the police to conduct flag-marches around sensitive areas and appealed to pro-Kannada activists to maintain peace. Emergency response teams including additional fire-fighting personnel were moved to areas around the Cauvery belt, including Bengaluru.

Protestors in Karnataka's Mandya district ate mud and placed their shoes on their heads to show their disagreement with the Supreme Court order.

In Tamil Nadu, state ministers were seen taking part in a ceremonial release of water from the Mettur dam for Samba cultivation in the Cauvery delta basin.

The water dispute between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu dates back to the 19th century.
