The video of the boy paraded naked in drought-hit village is going viral.
Chitradurga, Karnataka:
A minor boy was paraded naked in a drought-hit village in Karnataka's Chitradurga district as part of a ritual to appease the rain gods.
The incident, which took place on June 10 in Pandarahalli village, came to light after video of the bizarre ritual went viral.
The boy, believed to be between 8-10 years of age, is seen walking through the village naked with just a garland around his neck, amid chanting and beating of drums by villagers.
As part of the ritual which has been in place for the last 30 years, villagers bury a young boy leg-deep in mud and pour water over him. He is then taken around the village, holding an idol of Lord Ganesh on his head.
The entire ritual is meant to signify gods blessing the village with rain.
The Karnataka State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (KSCPCR) has sought a report on the incident. "After I receive a report, the commission will decide on what action to take," Dr Kripa Alva, Chairperson of KSCPRC told NDTV.
